Cyclone lashes NW Australia; no injuries reported (AP)

PERTH, Australia ? A cyclone has lashed northwest Australia with 85 mph (140 kph) winds and torrential rain. There were no immediate reports of injury or substantial damage.

Tropical Cyclone Heidi crossed the coast near the mining town of Port Hedland on Thursday morning.

Port Hedland Mayor Kelly Howlett told the Nine Network television that the town is being battered by 85 mph (140 kph) gusts and that residents are urged to stay indoors until the official all clear is given.

The Bureau of Meteorology says up to 10 inches (25 centimeters) of rain and a dangerous storm tide are predicted for coastal areas.
